The salmon run may have come late this year, but it’s no deterrent to the army of predators lying in wait--bears, eagles, and more, all hoping to get their fill before the temperatures plummet. For the salmon, these predators are just another obstacle to overcome in a daunting journey that stretches upstream from the salty waters of the Pacific to the natal rivers of their birth. Upon arrival, eggs must be deposited and fertilized, before the migrators die a few weeks later; a parting gift of nutrients to the ecosystem that birthed them.
