Smithsonian Networks (SNI/SI Networks L.L.C.) is a joint venture between Showtime Networks Inc. and the Smithsonian Institution. It was formed to create new channels that are both entertaining and informative. It is inspired by the work and assets of the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum complex.
Smithsonian Channel HD currently has distribution agreements with the following television providers:

Smithsonian Channel HD is available nationally via satellite on DirecTV and Dish Network. If your cable or telephone provider does not carry us, please let them know of your interest by calling, e-mailing or writing them.
Providers are working hard to launch new high definition channels daily. For specific dates in your market please contact your provider directly.
We are also available as an On Demand service, both in HD and Standard Definition depending on your service provider.

The content is largely inspired by the Smithsonian Institution’s rich resources – and has original features and series in subjects including Air and Space, Pop Culture, History and Mystery, Smithsonian Kids™, Science, Natural Wonders, and More Smithsonian™.

The Smithsonian Institution was founded in 1846 by an Act of Congress with its mission as "the increase and diffusion of knowledge." Smithsonian Institution consists of 19 Museums (including the top 3 most visited museums in the world) and the National Zoo. There are over 150 affiliated museums in 39 states, Panama and Puerto Rico, and traveling exhibitions throughout America that visit over 100 museums every year. Smithsonian has 700 world-class scientists on staff and 9 research centers around the globe; and over 136 million artifacts -- from Dorothy’s ruby slippers to the Lunar Orbiter.
