We live in a designed world. From life-saving equipment to time-passing gadgets, we're surrounded by objects that fascinate us, annoy us, and define us. But how did they become such an integral part of our lives? We explore the origins of design, a byproduct of the Industrial Revolution, when manufacturing of goods was removed from craftsmen and put onto human production lines. For 150 years, designers struggled to serve two masters, art and the commerce, trying to give a personality to the utilitarian products being mass-produced.
